Rowan Tree Talisman silver pendant
The Rowan, also known as Witch Tree, Wicken Tree and Quickbeam, to name but a few, is one of the most magical of trees, with a wealth of folklore attached to it. It is associated with the goddess Brighid, the Celtic patroness of the arts, healing, smithing, spinning and weaving. and in Scotland, fairies were said to hold their celebrations within stone circles protected by Rowan. The Druids burnt Rowan on funeral pyres, as it also symbolized death and rebirth, and also in rites of divination, spirit invocation , and purification. Rowan is also associated with dragons and serpents - sacred Rowans were once said to be guarded by dragons.
Rune staves were often cut from the rowan tree for amulets by Norsemen and in the Christian era, the twigs have been used for protection against witches, sorcery, negative magic and the Evil Eye. Twigs tied in a cross with red thread are fixed to doors and barns to keep the inhabitants and livestock from being enchanted, saying this charm, ‘Rowan tree and red thread, will put witches to their speed’ . However, modern day witches also use Rowan wood for magic wands, to increase their psychic powers, and in spells of healing, success, and protection.
The Rowan has always been a very special tree for me and so I was inspired to create this talismanic pendant. It is carefully formed by hand from precious metal clay which offers a more eco-friendly alternative to mined silver as it uses reclaimed silver. (To learn more about this, please take a look under the Silver Jewellery notes on my About page). The leaf-shaped pendant has a Rowan leaf design and is set with a round cut garnet cabochon to represent a rowan berry. A dotted border completes the design and both the fine silver pendant piece and sterling silver chain have been gently antiqued with a dark patina to bring out the detail. Finally, the pendant piece has been finished with microcrystalline wax, to resist tarnishing and finger prints. On the reverse side, it is quality marked 999 and I have inscribed the Celtic Ogham symbol for Rowan, as a secret symbol known only to the wearer.
The pendant measures approximately 2.5cm x 1cm and is attached via a silver jump ring to an 18 inch, 925 sterling silver rolo chain which fastens with a spring ring clasp and is quality marked 925.Each piece of Holaweg silver jewellery comes beautifully presented and ready to gift in a reusable, natural fibre fabric bag. You can see an example of this in the picture (please note, gift bag designs may vary slightly.)
